Zweigelt grape always gives some certain softness and roundness to the wine.

Good to have it with: try pairing it with fish cooked in wine or tomato-based sauce to really bring out the flavors. Chicken, duck, or fowl can be eaten with this wine.

Anita and Hans Nittnaus’ philosophy is complete devotion to making wines reflecting the origin and terroir of the area. The vineyards are farmed according to biodynamic methods; hand harvest, spontaneous fermentation and a low intervention approach to winemaking take center stage. The vineyards are situated in Burgenland, on the northern shore of lake Neusiedl: the eastern side around the town of Gols (clay/loam/gravel/sand) and the western side around the town of Jois on the Leitha mountains (slate/limestone). The winery focuses on red wines and the main varieties are Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and Merlot. The wines represent their unique Pannonian style, characterized by elegance, complexity, and longevity.

The Nittnaus family has been in the town of Gols, in the Neusiedler See wine region in Burgenland since 1684. The current Nittnaus estate was  established by Hans’ grandfather Johann Nittnaus in 1927, and was taken over by Anita & Hans in 1985. In a relatively short period of time, Nittnaus became a leading winery of the Neusiedlersee wine region and one of  the best wine producers of Austria.

Harvest and selection by hand, mid- until end of September 2018

Spontaneous fermentation; maceration and fermentation in stainless steel; aged on the lees for 15 months in 500l and 300l used oak barrels

2018 started off cool until the very warm spring. Early flowering and even earlier veraison. Hot, but in between enough rain from the east (which means Leithaberg drier than east side of the lake). Harvest started exceptionally early (mid-August). High levels of ripeness, but still a lot of tension and elegance. Beautiful vintage especially for red wines.

Alcohol Grade: 12.5%

Size: 750 ml
