The Producer: Michele Satta
Founded in 1983, Michele Satta’s winery is deeply rooted in Bolgheri, one of Tuscany’s most renowned wine regions. The vineyards thrive under a Mediterranean climate, where warm days and cooling sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea create ideal conditions for ripening. The diverse soils, a mix of calcareous clay and limestone, provide excellent drainage and contribute to the structure and minerality of the wines. Unlike many in the region, Satta took a different path, introducing Syrah, Teroldego, and Viognier alongside the classic Bordeaux varieties, showcasing a broader interpretation of Bolgheri’s potential.
In the cellar, Satta embraces traditional yet thoughtful winemaking. Fermentations include whole clusters for Sangiovese and Syrah, and aging takes place in a mix of barriques, amphorae, and concrete tanks to enhance complexity. Farming is sustainable, with biodynamic techniques and renewable energy sources integrated into the process. The wines are known for their depth, elegance, and a distinct sense of place, consistently earning praise for their balance of power and finesse. Through meticulous craftsmanship and a deep respect for the land, Michele Satta has carved out a unique voice in Bolgheri, producing wines that speak authentically of their terroir.
