Wine Details

This is a small vineyard and a young winery located in the foothills of the beautiful Alsace region. Positioned perfectly between the Hills of Vosges and the Rhine river which means a perfect micro-climate for growing the best quality grapes.

The Vineyard has 38 individual parcels of land spread over 3 villages and currently grow 9 different varieties of grapes. This is a dry vineyard (no irrigation). The soil is predominantly clay over limestone with a relatively high concentration of magnesium for this part of the Alsace region. The high magnesium levels are a result from an ancient sea levels evaporating around 210 million years ago. Combined with cool climate, it gives the wines a unique and crisp balance over other wines from Alsace.

The grapes are only hand picked and their vines are meticulously hand tendered all year round.  The Vineyard is certified Organic which means they adhere to strict regulations and use no pesticides on the vines.

Aging/ Vinification: Harvest and manual selection, 60% destemming. Fermentation for 11 days in tanks with pump-overs, aging in stainless steel tanks for 12 months on fine lees. Stelvin capsule, to preserve bouquet, homogeneity and longevity.
Residual Sugar: 2 g./L,
Best to have it: 54-57ºF, 12-14ºC

The Winery: Domaine Ansen

Domaine Ansen is a one-person-operation run by Daniel Ansen who has become a winemaker in Bordeaux. After a 10-year experience, he took over his relatives’ vineyards and launched his own wine. He is focused on aromatic wines from cool climate. The wine range was simultaneously influenced by french and german cultures

The ground is clay with red sandstone. Added with cool climate conditions, it brings acidity to the wine. That makes it food friendly and promised to a long ageing. The slope is moderate. The field is protected from northern winds thanks to a sandstone cliff. This place is part of Wangen “horst”. The underground makes this wine unique because the stones were used to build the cathedral in Strasbourg.
