The Winery: Domaine des Berthiers
Perched on the flinty slopes of Saint-Andelain overlooking the Loire, Domaine des Berthiers is part of the Fournier family’s impressive collection in Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre. The estate spans around 11 hectares of vines planted on limestone and silex-rich soils—deeply fissured terrain dating back to the Cretaceous period. These soils provide exceptional drainage and a pronounced mineral signature in the wines. The vineyards, facing southwest at about 250 m elevation, benefit from warm days and cool river breezes, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining lively acidity and aromatic purity.
Now run by winemaker Damien Laurent, the estate continues the legacy of Jean-Claude Dagueneau with a steady focus on precision and terroir expression. Farming is sustainable, with minimal intervention and careful vineyard attention to preserve soil health and grape quality. The grapes are harvested by hand, gently pressed, and slowly fermented at cool temperatures over several weeks to capture nuance and freshness. Wines then rest on fine lees before bottling, contributing to depth without oak influence. Domaine des Berthiers is quietly respected for producing expressive, refined Sauvignon Blancs—marked by flinty smoke, citrus detail, and a poised balance—that consistently offer serious Loire character.
