Peter Jakob Kühn Lenchen Riesling Spätlese 2020

USD $109

Grape: 100% Riesling

Appellation: VDP Große Lage (Grand Cru)

Region: Rheingau, Germany

You’ll taste/smell: This is one of those wines that completely changes how you think about “sweet” wine. The nose is super lifted and precise — think lemon zest, lime, a touch of mandarin, with a salty, almost oyster-shell minerality and a light smoky edge that keeps it serious. On the palate, it’s all about tension: juicy stone fruit and citrus wrapped around a perfect balance of sweetness and razor-sharp acidity. It feels light, vibrant, and super alive — never heavy, just layered and endlessly drinkable.

Good to have it with: It works beautifully with Thai curry, sushi, seared scallops, or even blue cheese — anything with a mix of spice, salt, or richness where the acidity cuts through and the slight sweetness ties everything together.

Description

Wine Details: Peter Jakob-Kühn Riesling Spätlese

Aging/ Vinification: The grapes are hand-harvested at Spätlese ripeness and gently whole-cluster pressed. Fermentation starts naturally with native yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and large neutral oak, with no temperature manipulation. The fermentation stops on its own, leaving natural residual sugar balanced by high acidity. The wine then rests on its fine lees for several months before bottling, with minimal intervention to keep everything precise and expressive.

Alcohol Grade: 12%
Residual sugar: 81 g/l.
Aging capacity: 2041
Size: 750 ml

The Producer: Peter Jakob-Kühn

Situated in the historic Rheingau on the right banks of the river Rhine, the Kühn Estate has been a cornerstone of German wine-making for roughly 230 years and has been passed down through 11 generations. Having grown into a 20 hectare estate, Peter Bernhard along with his wife Viktoria, his parents Peter Jakob and Angela, as well as his sister Sandra continue to both preserve the established traditions of their ancestors and to pursue modern viticultural techniques. In 2004 they made the decision to achieve a certification as organic and biodynamic winery. The belief and expectation of quality wine manifests itself in their memberships in the VDP (Prädikat Wine Estates), Demeter, and “La Renaissance des Appellations”. The result is a collection of exquisite and well-defined rieslings.

Selected from the Doosberg, Lenchen and Klosterberg appellations, all rich soils of loam with strains of grey quartzite creating a deeply concentrated mineral background and a truly focused riesling. Entirely hand-harvested grapes slow-pressed in whole clusters for several hours. Fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel and large oak barrels on the complete lees until April.

This is an organic and biodynamic wine
