The Basics You Should Know About Bordeaux Wines

Which Grapes Are Used in Bordeaux Wines?

Bordeaux is best known for blends rather than single-variety wines. The classic red grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Cabernet Franc playing an important role, especially on the Right Bank.

Cabernet Sauvignon: Gives structure, tannin, and black-fruit character.
Merlot: Adds softness, ripe fruit, and body.
Cabernet Franc: Brings freshness, spice, and aromatic lift.
Petit Verdot: Adds color, tannin, and intensity in small amounts.

Why Are Bordeaux Wines So Valuable?

The most expensive Bordeaux wines come from estates with exceptional vineyard sites, long histories, and very limited production. Their reputations were reinforced by Bordeaux’s 1855 Classification, while strong demand and decades of aging potential have made the top estates some of the most sought-after wines in the world.

The 4 Bordeaux Appellations to Start With

If you are new to Bordeaux, these four appellations are a useful place to begin. They cover the region’s two main styles and give you a good introduction to what Bordeaux can do.

Pauillac: Cabernet-led reds with power, structure, and aging potential.
Saint-Émilion: Merlot-driven reds with richness and softer tannins.
Margaux: Elegant Cabernet blends with fragrance and finesse.
Pomerol: Rich, concentrated Merlot with remarkable texture.
