The Producer: Matassa
Nestled in the rugged hills of Roussillon, Matassa is a winery that embodies a deep respect for nature and traditional winemaking. Founded in 2003 by Tom Lubbe, a New Zealand-born winemaker with a passion for minimal intervention, the estate is known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. The vineyards, situated on schist and marl soils at high elevations, benefit from a Mediterranean climate tempered by cooling winds, allowing for slow ripening and naturally balanced acidity. The old-vine Carignan, Grenache, Macabeu, and Muscat planted here thrive without synthetic treatments, resulting in pure, expressive wines that truly reflect their terroir.
In the cellar, Matassa follows a strict low-intervention philosophy—harvesting by hand, fermenting with native yeasts, and avoiding additives or heavy extractions. The wines are often aged in neutral vessels such as old barrels or concrete tanks, preserving their vibrancy and authenticity. With no or minimal sulfur used at bottling, Matassa’s wines are known for their freshness, energy, and raw, unfiltered character. Loved by natural wine enthusiasts and critics alike, the estate has earned a reputation for producing some of the most compelling and terroir-driven wines in southern France.
